Why Is It So Difficult?!?!

We are in the process of looking for a new house. Sadly, we have come to the agreement that we have outgrown the house we are in and need more space. Which, that is okay with me due to the neighborhood starting to take a turn for the worse.
Here is the dilemma that I find myself in and it is just so aggravating. There is the perfect house which comes along with 4 acres of land on a lake for only 300,000. My father-in-law believes he can get it for us for around 275, but here is the problem with that scenario. The concrete used in the slab was the incorrect mixture so the slab cracked real bad making it unstable.
Okay, being an architect, I know this can be fixed and the house still needs to be finished the rest of the way which will be about another 100,000 to finish. Now, being the person I am, I want space and love this lot and house. I see great potential with this house and it is basically the style that my wife does like.
Now she believes that this is going to take too much work and likes this two story house that is just a bit down the road from us. Well, I haven’t been inside of it as of yet, but it is still in a neighborhood that could go down hill. The house I like is in an area which is deed restricted so that could never happen. Anyway, I think my wife had her mind set on this two story without even seeing the inside. Granted, they want 272,00 for this, so it is a lot less then what we are looking at with the other, but we are also talking about 4 acres compared to ¼ acre.
So, is there a happy medium or am I doomed to a house that I am not sure that we both will be happy with. We are extremely happy with the house that is on the 4 acre lot, but she is afraid of what it will take to finish it. My argument is that we can finish this house the way we want it, but I am not sure that is enough for her. Ugh!!!!!!!!!
Why is this so difficult?!?!?! I see the one house as an opportunity and it will pay for itself in no time at all because the people want to get rid of it so they are wiling to take a loss. The two story is not an opportunity and will not make the money that the other would. Yes, I know it is just a roof over our head and I should be happy with what ever we get. L It would just be nice to live in a bit more of a secluded area. I am tired of neighbors. Watch out Unabomber, here I come. LOL

Looking for new houses can be very difficult. It's actually quite a scary proposition too isn't it? Someone once told me though that you know the house that you are destined for the moment you walk through the door. If you don't get that 'feeling' straight away then it's probably not meant for you.

Don't know how true that is mind!

Thank you. I have the feeling when we walk into the house that is on the 4 acres. We are supposed to go see the other house tomorrow.

House hunting is very difficult and I how you are able to find something that you both agree on.

Does that feeling work with anything? Like that pie I had last night? it was destined for me. Or that wicked pair of shoes? :) I wish.

Id go for the house with some work to go into it, the acreage is great for the price compared to the other.

Hmmmm mention the value of each house in the long run, return on investments, space and location. Im sure once she sees things (possibilities) a little differently things might turn around.

All the best :)

hmm do u know why the house is for sale? surrounding area? is the land in good shape? no swampiness?

I dont know anything about mixtures but id probably look into that and see what can happen worse case scenarios. Im sure you are already aware. (im picturing tilting in the future)

Just thinking out loud.

OMG its by a lake?!?!

LOL Yes, it is by a lake and the neighborhood is awesome. The house won't tilt, but what could happen is that the flooring would be uneven. It is a fixable thing by pouring a cap on top of the damaged slab. I estimate it will be about 100,000 to finish the house and as I said it could be the way we want it. Yes, it is that feeling of man this is just so right.
As for the other house, I have some bad feelings about it. The picture as you can see looks nice, but it is only a year old and I know the owners have THREE HUGE DOGS, so that worries me. Who knows.
I guess I just am set on the other house that I don't want any other option. I know that is bad, but most of my life has been settling, which I no longer want to do.
Thanks for the opinions and comments!!!
